Sssh! Periods Break the Stigma

Posted on Friday / May 22

Two years ago, seven brave 8th graders at Bronx Prep Middle School decided to tackle a taboo subject: periods. Frustrated with the culture of shame around periods, these spunky, hilarious, and opinionated women took on the tampon tax, period poverty, and the coded language we use to talk about women’s bodies. Their podcast Sssh! Periods won National Public Radio’s first-ever Student Podcast Challenge, beating out 25,000 other students from 5,700 schools across the United States. We have also been featured by several organizations including NPRWNYCTeen VogueAfropunk, and The Today Show. Our partnerships with Proctor & Gamble and LOLA have also allowed us to provide 60,000 pads for Bronx Prep Middle School and Bronx Prep High School.

Sssh! Periods put out episodes every other week, featuring a rotating cast of guests from Bronx Prep and beyond. You can find us on Buzzsprout and Apple Podcasts.
